York's very first Korfball tournament is just around the corner! Korfball stands out as a sport that embraces true gender inclusivity, where all genders play together on an equal level. Let's come together and help our club promote inclusivity and spread the joy of sport right here at York. We'd love to have your support!
York Korfball was established in 2018, so we're a pretty new club, but that just means we're eager to make our mark here in York. Looking back, starting up just before COVID-19 hit wasn't the best timing, but who could have seen that coming? Korfball is a wonderfully diverse sport that welcomes players of all genders to compete together on equal footing. Our club takes pride in being inclusive, welcoming everyone to join in, even though most people, including many in the club, have never heard of the sport. It's all about levelling the playing field (despite the game being played in a sports hall).
The actual sport of korfball is similar to netball and basketball, with the word ‘Korf’ being Dutch for basket. The sport was set out in the Netherlands to encourage school boys and girls to play sports together during PE classes. The sport has slowly integrated itself into the rest of Europe and all the way up to little Yorkshire. It’s a fast-paced sport aiming to score as many goals as possible with the ball into the Korf (the basket), hence the name Korfball. On the court, there are 4 girls and 4 boys making up the team who are split evenly between the two divisions. Each division takes turns attacking and defending, after two goals are scored, the teams switch their position, with defenders becoming attackers and vice versa.
As for our achievements, our first team clinched the top spot in the league last year, and our second team put up some fantastic performances in their debut year, finishing solidly in the middle of the pack. Korfball holds significant meaning for inclusivity in sports, especially here in York. We aim to get everyone, regardless of gender or sporting background, to give Korfball a shot (excuse the pun). That's why your donations matter so much to us. They'll help raise awareness for our sport and foster an inclusive sports environment in York. Any contributions would go a long way in making a difference for our club and Korfball in York.
Every donation we receive will go directly towards funding York's first EVER Korfball Tournament! We aim to raise £1,000 to go towards hall time, paying referees and medical staff for the tournament. If we raise more than this, the additional money will go towards our kit, which will ensure that all newcomers will represent Team York during the tournament.
Tournaments can be pricey, but they're like the ultimate icebreaker for people who've never heard of Korfball. Picture this: a day filled with laughter, friendly competition, and maybe a few surprising twists on the court. It's all about getting people hooked on the game in a super chill, no-pressure way. Plus, every tournament game is a chance for someone new to discover the joy of Korfball and the inclusivity the game fosters. Yorks first ever Korfball tournament means smiles, laughter and high-fives all around!
Korfball tournaments are a way for newcomers to the sport to come together from all areas in the north including Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool to celebrate their love of Korfball. Tournaments encourage teams to play each other in friendlies to help develop their skills and make new friends.
