Double your donation: donor matchfunded £500

£2,114 has been raised from 97 donors.

Cheerleading is raising money so that we are able to send all competition teams to 3 competitions next year without having to raise our already high membership prices, in the cost of living crisis. On top of this, to improve our health and safety, we are fundraising for another mat which will benefit all our teams. Any donation you are able to give will be highly appreciated and will make a massive difference to our club.

Our Story

York Hornets Cheerleading has been running for over fifteen years making us the biggest club on campus with the most consistently attending members. Our club consists of 9 teams, catering for all abilities across cheer and dance.

Within the past 3 years we have won sports moment of the year and have been nominated for 3 awards at colours ball. We have also performed highly in competitions with Pom, Black, Venom and Sting becoming national champions, Hip-Hop, Pom and Gold placing 2nd, demonstrating that we are a highly decorated club. We also play a vital role across all of Roses, not only competing to earn points for York but supporting and performing across a variety of sports to motivate fellow athletes.

Our club membership has increased by 47% in the past year and we believe that these members deserve more opportunities to showcase their hard work and talent. Unfortunately, cheerleading is an expensive sport with our average membership price being £140, not including uniform and other necessities. This is not accessible for everyone, especially during the cost of living crisis, at the university despite the fact that everyone should have the opportunity to access any sport they wish.

Your donation would allow us to increase these opportunities without having to increase costs and cater for our constantly expanding club.

Where will the money go?

The money raised will go towards entry to a 3rd competition and new equipment for all cheer teams.

This year we have spent over £7,000 on 2 competitions so if we raise £3,500 across challenge week then we will be well on our way to being able to compete in a 3rd competition next year.

An average performance space should be 9 mats but we only own 4.5 mats which massively limits our potential and safety throughout our training sessions. Could you imagine a football team playing a match on only half a pitch?! 1 new mat costs approximately £1,000, but a second hand mat in good condition could cost as little as £450 so even small donations will benefit the whole of the club.

Why is this so important?

In past years we have traditionally competed at 3 competitions, however, due to financial issues, we have been unable to do so this year. We spend the entire year preparing for competitions, and we would love as many opportunities as possible to showcase our abilities. Other teams compete much more regularly than we do, and we would love to also have the same opportunities. Competitions allow us to show off our dedication, hard work and talent. These donations would allow us to compete in more competitions, without us having to increase our membership fees even more, and making our sport even more inaccessible.

Practising on more mats will not only significantly increase the safety of our training sessions and showcases, but it will also help to prepare our teams to be able to perform to the best of their ability. This funding would put us in a better position to be able to compete against other teams who have these facilities available to them. Having more mats will allow us to train at a higher and more realistic level, as we would have the space to practise our routines all together and in a more appropriate setting, that better reflects the space at competitions and performances.

The Challenges

Below are some of the challenges we will complete as part of the week:

  • 7 performances over 7 days

There will be multiple performances across the week supporting other York sports teams such as Goodricke Netball, Hockey and Mens Cricket.

We will also be performing at the British Cheerleading Association competition with all of these performances being live streamed on our Hornets Facebook page

  • Physical challenges (with the help of York Hornets alumni)
