York Student TV

Double your donation: donor matchfunded £350

£4,524 has been raised from 55 donors.

We would like 2 things: to keep our membership prices low, allowing any student to join our society, and…a replay controller! Which would allow us to improve the quality of our sports streams and give our members access to more amazing industry standard tech!

Your donation can help with both of these, so read on to find out more about why we’d love your donation.

Our Story

YSTV is the oldest Student Television Society in England, founded in 1967, since then we have developed from black and white video tape, all the way to 12 concurrent YouTube livestreams at Roses 2025!

We all love pre-recorded and live TV, short films and series, covering local events and livestreaming University Sports fixtures. In 2025 we even won the National Student Television Association’s ‘Best Broadcaster’ award, and we are looking forward to the 2026 awards at the end of March!

Broadcasting sports and live events is one of the major activities of the station, from MMA Fight Night, the Roses competition, Sabbs Come dancing to the end of year Love York Awards. It is important to us, and the people involved in the events that we cover the events, allowing those who cannot attend, parents and friends to be able to take part, but there is only so much we can do with linear streaming.

With the recent changes to YuFund rules and limits on applications, there is less opportunity now for us to expand and improve our broadcasting quality without increasing our membership costs, or charging for the event coverage we are proud to provide. Both are things we are extremely reluctant to do, as we want to keep membership of YSTV and having event coverage accessible to all.

We all would really appreciate any donation you are able to provide in order to support our continuing effort to cover everything we can on and around Campus!

Where will the money go?

As a media society upgrading our kit to continuously improve our sports streams is part of what we do.

However, making student television accessible to as many students as possible is very important to us. This means keeping our membership price as low as possible. Not wanting to increase this means we are looking to Challenge Week to raise money, allowing us to purchase our next big upgrade: a replay controller!

This will allow us to replay the best moments of a livestream, whether that is sports, awards or a competition! We will be able to repeat key moments, slow them down and emphasise the drama and skill of the people on screen at their very best! Making our coverage more in-depth, meaningful and impactful on the audience as well as providing the opportunity for our members to learn a new Livestream skill we haven’t been able to explore so far!

Why is this so important?

We will be able to provide more exciting sports coverage for our sports streams, without having to pressure current and future members into paying more for their membership.

Providing access to industry standard kit for our members is something that we highly value at YSTV and the replay controller is a way to further provide access to tech that most students would never otherwise get the opportunity to use.

It is also an exciting thing to provide our sports societies whose tireless efforts during their games are broadcast by us. The replay wheel will improve the coverage, making sure we never miss the best, most exciting action, for friends and family to watch back home, and for teams to watch back for their highlights.

The Challenges!

Below are some of the challenges we will complete as part of the week:

  • 24 hour livestream - we will be producing 24 hours straight of live content including games, special radio on TV shows, YSTV live shows, and even a live OB.
  • Sports Day - in collaboration with sports societies, YSTV will be taking part and filming the societies Touch Grass event.
  • We will be having a costume competition, the theme will be on our instagram along with photos of the event on the 10th March.
  • And YSTV is taking part in an event hosted by Women’s rugby where we test our general knowledge against URY!
