University Radio York

Double your donation: donor matchfunded £350

£2,542 has been raised from 54 donors.

We're raising £2000 to make essential upgrades to our station, to ensure the UK’s Oldest Independent Radio Station keeps broadcasting 24/7! Much of our radio equipment is wearing out and we need funding to be able to keep going and make repairs.

Our Story

University Radio York is the UK’s Oldest Legal Independent Radio Station, broadcasting since 1968. We provide 24/7 radio to the University of York on 88.3 FM and the wider York area through digital radio, and online at ury.org.uk. We cover a wide range of events, and provide essential coverage to students for the SU elections and the Roses varsity.

The station is run by students, for students, and many of our alumni go on to have long careers in the media industry. We’re multi-award winning, and last year we won 5 student radio awards (the most of any station in the UK!).

However, behind the scenes much of our essential equipment is now reaching the end of its lifespan. As a fully functioning radio station, we require a lot of funding to keep us going and without replacing some equipment soon, our ability to broadcast reliably could be compromised. We upgraded our studios 8 years ago, but now some of the essential equipment in our studios is beginning to fail and will need replacing. We also want to buy some new equipment to improve our studios and our broadcasting capability especially for live music and live sports. By donating you’ll be able to support our legacy and give hugely valuable opportunities to students for years to come.

We would hugely appreciate any donations you are able to make to support URY.

Where will the money go?

Any funding we receive will go towards new equipment for us to broadcast with.

We would like to spend £2000 to make a number of significant purchases: our first priority is a replacement for all of our audio compressors which are beginning to fail; then a new internet router to improve our networking infrastructure; then an upgrade to our FM monitoring; and also a variety of microphones for outside broadcasts; and new headphones for our studios.

If we exceed our target, we will begin planning the next stage of studio upgrades - we’ve got a very long wishlist of things we’d like to install!

Why is this so important?

This funding will allow us to continue broadcasting to the high standard that we currently do. Without it the capabilities and functionality of our station could be severely limited which would both remove a service to the area and an opportunity to students.

As a community radio station broadcasting to the entire York area, we provide a locally focused broadcasting especially aimed at students. We also partake in a number of community focused events covering what students want to hear.

Without URY many students would lose a vital opportunity for them. Many URY members go on to have prosperous careers in the media, and their experience in URY is the most valuable aspect of their experience. It’s also incredibly fun! For many students, URY is where they find their voice for the first time, whether that’s hosting a late night music show, or commentating at Roses. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to share their creativity with a load of people, and a way of connecting back home. So many people have made incredible memories at URY and it would be an enormous shame to lose that.

Below are some of the challenges we will complete as part of the week:
