We are raising £1,500 for a dedicated equipment trailer and beginner-friendly gear to stop equipment from limiting how many students can join us on the water. By cutting individual costs and freeing up car seats, we are making it possible for every student to find a place in our community and improve their well-being.
The University of York Sailing and Windsurfing Club is a thriving community for students seeking watersports adventure. We are currently in a historic era for the club; last year, we reached our highest membership numbers ever and successfully reached the BUCS finals for the first time in thirteen years. We were also incredibly proud to be named Team of the Year at the York Sport Awards. This momentum was further fuelled by our incredible community, which helped us fundraise £36,000 last year to replace our aging fleet with some much needed "new" Firefly sailing boats.
However, as last year’s fundraising focussed entirely on replacing our sailing fleet, our windsurf section is now in urgent need of investment. We are on a mission to ensure our windsurfing section isn't left behind. With the rising cost of living, many students are finding it harder to afford sports that involve specialised equipment and long-distance travel. By raising money for a dedicated trailer and updated gear, we are working to lower those costs and allow more members to participate in these sessions.
This campaign is vital because it ensures that windsurfing remains an accessible way for students to support their physical and mental health without financial strain. Your support helps us transform the club into a more inclusive, sustainable community where equipment storage never comes at the expense of a student’s seat in the car. We would really appreciate any donations you are able to make to support our club and our members.
Our goal is to improve our windsurfing section, by upgrading our setup and gear to get as many students on the water as possible.
First Priority: Dedicated Windsurf Trailer - £750. Currently, equipment takes up car seats that should be for students. By storing our gear in a permanent trailer at the Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club, we free up those car seats, allowing more people to attend and significantly lowering the individual travel cost per person.
Second Priority: New Winter Wetsuits - £250. If we raise £1,000, the next £250 will be invested in new winter wetsuits. Being out on the water in the colder months is a lot more appealing when you actually have the gear to stay warm and safe. This investment is really about supporting student well-being year-round, ensuring that the cold, miserable weather doesn't stop attendance for our windsurf sessions.
Third Priority: Beginner/Intermediate Windsurf Board - £500. Hitting our £1,500 total, allows us to purchase a new windsurf board, specifically designed for learning. Much of our current equipment is too advanced and difficult for new members to use effectively. A stable, beginner friendly board will help our members progress much faster, provide better quality sessions, and give them the confidence they need to eventually represent the club in competitive events.
This project is essential because it removes the physical and financial barriers that currently limit our windsurfing community. By investing in a dedicated trailer, we ensure that equipment storage never comes at the expense of a student’s seat in the car. This allows more members to participate while sharing travel costs, making the sport truly accessible during the cost-of-living crisis. Our goal is to create a sustainable, inclusive environment where financial strain never dictates whether a student can experience the joy of being on the water.
Beyond the logistics, your support facilitates a transformative experience for our members. For many, university is the first time they have ever stepped onto a board; providing the right beginner gear ensures that early frustration is replaced by the confidence boost of mastering a new skill. Windsurfing offers a vital outlet for mental health, providing a unique sense of stress relief through immersion in nature and exercise. Your donation helps us build more than just a fleet, it helps us build a supportive community where students from all backgrounds can find belonging and improve their well-being.
Below are some of the challenges we will complete as part of the week:
Follow us on Instagram @yorksailing, where we post regular updates, celebrate our fundraising milestones, and share sailing and windsurfing content from our sessions at Ripon and Yorkshire Dales sailing clubs.
We would love you to donate as much or as little as you are able and any donations are hugely appreciated. Your donation could also help us unlock fundraising challenges which will help us reach our goal even faster (you can see these on the challenges page).
If you are looking to support an individual athlete or challenge please put a message with your donation saying who!
Alternatively, if you are unable to donate then please do spread the word by signing up as a Challenge Week ambassador for our club, and sharing our social media posts to your own socials so as many people as possible can read about our efforts!
