Hello! We’re raising money to make the traditionally-inaccessible sport of Polo - known historically as the ‘sport of kings’ more available to more students from a wider array of backgrounds.
We are the University of York Polo Club, encouraging university students to engage in the obscure sport of polo - played on horseback in teams of 4, there are very few sports that come close to matching the adrenaline, teamwork and coordination demonstrated in polo matches.
Polo is traditionally known as the ‘Sport of Kings’, but in the UoYPC we are trying to open up Polo to the wider student body and create a sport where you don’t need the treasury of a King to participate! The vast majority of our members have never played polo before starting university, and many had never learnt to ride before beginning from scratch.
Your donation this challenge week will help us to open up polo to a wider cohort of the student body, giving students who normally would never think to try polo to get into the sport of a lifetime - university level polo is far cheaper than lessons post-education, so for many students university is the best place to try out the sport.
We would be really thankful for any donations you can make to support our club, and our efforts to open up Polo to the wider student populace.
We will use your donation to open up University Polo at all levels to the student population through subsidies.
Our number one goal is to introduce more students to our sport through taster sessions. Our first goal of £500 raised will enable us to massively subsidise taster sessions for incoming students.
We also want to showcase the entire experience of the UoYPC: the highlight of which is our participation in the national student tournaments during the summer and winter months. For this reason, our second fundraising target is £1000, which we hope to use to fund more student polo tournaments. Our ultimate goal is £3000, which we will use to subsidise transport and accommodation costs for our national tournaments.
This money will bolster our club by making polo more accessible to the whole student community, from the completely new player to the more more seasoned players in the club. For many students, trying polo at university is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that builds confidence, resilience and lifelong friendships. We will achieve our boost in accessibility mainly through taster sessions - allowing students a significantly discounted first experience with Polo. The funds we raise will also be used to support lesson subsidies, enabling more students from a wider array of backgrounds to access regular polo lessons. Finally, we will use the funding from Challenge Week to support tournament entries, allowing students the opportunity to participate at the highest levels of university polo.
Below are some of the challenges we will complete as part of the week:
We have an instagram through which you can keep up to date with the challenges taking place, we would love for you to follow us at @universityofyorkpolo.
We would love you to donate as much or as little as you are able and any donations are hugely appreciated. Your donation could also help us unlock fundraising challenges which will help us reach our goal even faster (you can see these on the challenges page).
If you are looking to support an individual athlete or challenge please put a message with your donation saying who!
Alternatively, if you are unable to donate then please do spread the word by signing up as a Challenge Week ambassador for our club, and sharing our social media posts to your own socials so as many people as possible can read about our efforts!
