Our Story

The University of York Lacrosse Club is one of the largest mixed sports clubs on campus, with a commitment to making lacrosse accessible for everyone and ‘growing the game’. We currently support over 80 members, creating a community where students feel a sense of belonging and wellbeing both on and off the pitch. For many, lacrosse is more than just a sport - it’s a space to make lifelong friendships, build confidence, and develop skills that extend into every part of student life.

We’re fundraising for two key reasons. Firstly, and most importantly, to ensure lacrosse remains accessible to all students. With the cost of living continuing to place pressure on young people, many of our members face financial barriers to participating in sport. Your support helps us remove those barriers, funding essential equipment, reducing participation costs, and creating opportunities that genuinely shape the student experience.

Secondly, to support our performance and continued success against Lancaster this year, ensuring we can compete at our highest level.

Every contribution helps us stay competitive on the pitch while keeping our club inclusive, supportive, and open to everyone. We would really appreciate any donations to help us continue making lacrosse a sport that is welcoming and accessible to all.

Where will the money go?

The money that we raise for challenge week will go primarily towards new kit for our teams, as well as professional coaches in the run up to Roses.

Our ultimate target is to raise £3,000 over Challenge Week, however, every small donation will make a difference.

Our priority would be to invest in new kit for the club. Our first £1,000 will go towards this. As our club grows, it can be difficult to provide kit for new players, as old equipment becomes worn, or outdated. This year, we have struggled to provide individual helmets and gloves for new men’s players, and we are somewhat reliant on individuals possessing their own kit. However, this is unrealistic for a beginner. This issue can also be seen in our goalie equipment. Training new goalies is difficult without adequate protection.

Once we have purchased all of the necessary kit, then our club will look to put money towards coaching for the higher performing teams. Once we reach our £2,000 checkpoint, we will be investing in professional coaches. So far this year, our Women’s 1st team has gone undefeated. This means they are extremely likely to move into a higher BUCS tier. This year also, our Men’s 1st team has moved up a league. Currently, our coaches are our captains. Our club is looking to invest in professional coaches that would allow our teams to fulfil their full potential, and help to improve the performance of all of our members,

Finally, if we achieve our overall goal of £3,000, we will invest in new goals, and other training equipment that could help our teams to improve. Equipment that goes beyond the necessities can be imperative in helping improve stick skills, fitness, and agility.

Why is this so important?

In Lacrosse, it is essential to have the appropriate equipment in order to play the game. As a fast growing club, it is difficult, yet necessary for us to provide sticks, helmets, gloves, and more, in order to accommodate new players. More equipment increases accessibility.

A primary example of where the money that we raise for Challenge Week will significantly increase accessibility is goalie kit. At the moment, we rely heavily on goalies possessing their own equipment. This makes it difficult to introduce new goalies to the club, as we cannot provide the protection that is necessary for training. Purchasing new goalie equipment significantly increases accessibility, and would allow for us to introduce beginners to a new part of the game that they may prefer.

The same can be said for the men’s side of the club. As Men’s Lacrosse is more physical, the field players require more protective equipment, such as helmets and gloves. We currently provide kit for players on two teams, and it is difficult to accommodate for students who have shown interest in joining throughout the academic year.

Currently, we struggle to provide enough equipment to accommodate first years, and other new members. This is something that we are adamant on changing. With your support, we can ensure that no one is turned away due to lack of equipment, and cost. With the correct equipment, we can provide better opportunities for beginners, help build their ability, and welcome them into the club. Not only will all newcomers be welcome, but they will be provided for.

The money that we gain from challenge week will allow us to accommodate more beginners, increasing our accessibility as a sport, and further allowing us to grow.

The Challenges!

Below are some of the challenges we will complete as part of the week:

  • YES day - donors will send in challenges for our current members to try, and they must say yes and give it their best shot! Send challenges into our instagram. It will be monitored by our YES day ambassadors, who will ensure our members attempt the challenges they are given to the best of their ability.
  • Plank Prize Draw - whoever gets chosen in the prize draw has to plank for 1 second per pound that has been raised throughout challenge week. Donors can pay to submit someone else’s name into the prize draw. By the end of the week, someone will have to plank the sum of all donations!
  • Kit day - all of UYLC will be in kit on campus all day.
  • 24 hour passing - members of UYLC will be seen outside of Courtyard passing for a full 24 hours. Members will swap every hour on the hour. The exchanges will be posted on our instagram, so look out for hourly updates!
  • Women play Men’s Lacrosse - UYLC’s women will try to beat the men at their own game!
  • Strava Lacrosse stick run - members and donors will run the shape of a Lacrosse stick (or other lacrosse related equipment) on this day.
