Cheerleading

Double your donation: donor matchfunded £350

£3,471 has been raised from 241 donors.

York Hornets Cheerleading and Dance are raising money for specialised safety sessions run by external coaches for all cheer teams. Also for subsidising uniform, transport and competition entry costs, and sending our Welfare Secretary to specialised mental health training to better support athletes returning from injuries. Your donations will place our teams in the strongest position competitively to keep winning national titles and ensure safety and fun for everyone!

Our Story

York Hornets Cheerleading and Dance is the University of York’s biggest sports society, with 13 different teams and over 270 members. In the last two years, we have won 8 national championship titles and had an 80% membership increase. We won club of the year in 2018 and 2024, and coach of the year in 2024. Most recently, we dominated Roses with a clean sweep against Lancaster.

As a sport, cheerleading is subject to a lot of misconceptions and stereotypes. As a club, we aim to be as inclusive and accessible as possible, accommodating all skill levels and representing the university nationally. With over 500 sign ups at freshers fair this year, we introduced a new development dance team, Crystal, to meet high demand! This means we now have 3 teams that are completely dedicated to developing skills with no entry requirements.

But we need your support! We would really appreciate any donations you are able to make to be able to support us!

Where will the money go?

Our overall target is £4000.

Where will your donations go?

- Improving health and safety whilst stunting and tumbling. We want to hire external coaches to teach specialised safety sessions and keep our first aid kits fully stocked at all times. This will cost in the region of £1000. This support will place all of our athletes in the best position from the start of the season. With lots of members joining with no previous cheer experience and 3 teams dedicated to developing skills, this is vital!

- Subsidising uniform costs, competition entry fees and transport costs. Competition fees cost £40-50 per athlete, per competition and we send our athletes to 3 competitions. Membership fees only just cover entry, let alone transport costs. On top of this, our members are subject to additional fees of around £250 for uniform and competition shoes.

- Sending our Welfare Secretary to specialised mental health training. This will ensure all members feel supported, and able to participate fully within the club, particularly for those returning from injuries. This training costs around £400

Why is this so important?

Your donations will place our teams in the strongest position competitively to keep winning national titles and ensure safety and fun for everyone!

No student should be unable to access the sport that they are interested in, as it is such a fundamental part of the university experience.
