For this year’s Challenge Week, our goal is to raise £7,000 to fund a dedicated outdoor shelter for our fleet. This investment will add years to the lifespan of our boats and directly support our mission of making rowing accessible to everyone. By protecting our equipment from the elements, we can redirect vital funds away from constant weather-related repairs and toward coaching, development, and growth—moving the club from a state of 'maintenance' to a future of true improvement.
Founded in 1963 during the University’s first active month, the University of York Boat Club is the oldest sports society on campus. We began through the generosity of York City Rowing Club, who provided equipment free of charge, and that spirit of community continues to define us today.
Our competitive record has never been stronger. UYBC has qualified for the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta four times since 2011, most recently in 2023. In 2025, our Senior Women made club history by qualifying for Henley Women’s Regatta and competing in the qualifiers for Henley Royal Regatta for the first time.
However, excellence in rowing comes with a significant cost. High-performance shells cost tens of thousands of pounds, a factor that has historically limited the sport to a privileged few in society. At UYBC, we are committed to changing that narrative. We believe that an athlete's background should never be a barrier to their potential; our goal is to ensure that anyone with the drive to row has the equipment and opportunity to do so.
Your support is about more than just funding a sport—it is an investment in a sixty-year tradition of grit and community. By donating, you help us remain an inclusive environment for all athletes, providing them with the reliable equipment they need to reach the podium.
Please consider making a donation today to help us protect our fleet and open the doors for the next generation of York rowers.
Our racing shells are high-performance machines, but their speed on the water belies a surprising vulnerability to the elements. Without adequate outdoor shelter, constant exposure to UV radiation, rain, and snow—compounded by temperature spikes and flood risks—leads to rapid structural deterioration. This isn't just cosmetic; it causes hull rot, hardware rust, and critical failure in our internal electronics and coxing wires.
By supporting our £7,000 goal for a dedicated outdoor shelter, you are doing more than buying a roof. You are extending our fleet’s lifespan by years and ensuring our athletes have safe, reliable equipment. Crucially, this allows us to redirect funds currently lost to weather-related repairs toward coaching, travel, and competition subsidies—directly lowering the financial barriers to the sport.
We are committed to making every donation count. Should we reach the £3,500 milestone instead of our full target, we will invest in a new racing quad. Expanding our fleet with a quad is a strategic step toward a more inclusive club. It allows our athletes to master sculling alongside sweep rowing, offering a far greater range of opportunities. Furthermore, it ensures that experienced rowers joining the university can immediately contribute their skills to the club, regardless of their previous rowing background.
Whether we are shielding our current fleet or expanding it with new equipment, your support is the foundation of our success.
Please consider donating today to help us build a more resilient, inclusive, and competitive UYBC.
At UYBC, our day begins while the rest of the campus is still asleep. The early morning training culture does more than build physical strength; it builds character. For our athletes, rowing is a vital outlet for mental health, offering a rare sense of clarity, teamwork, and resilience that balances the pressures of university life.
However, sustaining this culture is a significant financial undertaking. Rowing is a resource-intensive sport; racing shells cost thousands, repairs cost hundreds, and every competition brings the added weight of trailering and entry fees. Currently, our funding is stretched thin by constant maintenance. When weather damage depletes our budget, membership fees must rise to cover the gap, inadvertently creating a financial barrier to the very sport we want to share.
Your support changes that.
By donating toward outdoor shelter for our shells, you are helping us stop the cycle of costly repairs. Protecting our fleet allows us to redirect membership funds where they matter most: subsidising travel, competition costs, and coaching. This ensures that UYBC remains an inclusive home for everyone (regardless of their financial background) and that we always have a fleet large enough to get every member out on the water.
Our Goal: £7,000 for a Sustainable Future
* At £7,000: we will build a dedicated outdoor shelter to protect our outdoor fleet
* At £3,500: we will invest in a new racing quad. This expands our capacity for sculling, allowing experienced joiners to contribute immediately and giving all athletes the chance to master every aspect of the sport.
Your contribution protects our equipment, supports our mental well-being, and ensures that the "early morning culture" of UYBC remains accessible to all.
Please consider donating today to help us keep York rowers on the water and moving forward.
Below are some of the challenges we will complete as part of the week:
We would love you to donate as much or as little as you are able and any donations are hugely appreciated. Your donation could also help us unlock fundraising challenges which will help us reach our goal even faster (you can see these on the challenges page).
If you are looking to support an individual athlete or challenge please put a message with your donation saying who!
Alternatively, if you are unable to donate then please do spread the word by signing up as a Challenge Week ambassador for our club, and sharing our social media posts to your own socials so as many people as possible can read about our efforts!
