With record-high membership across our men’s and women’s teams, we’re raising £2,000 to fund new equipment, additional court time, and more competitive fixtures. This investment will ease overcrowding and expand opportunities beyond the limited BUCS schedule, ensuring every player can train and compete properly. Just as importantly, it allows us to welcome newcomers, build lasting friendships, and strengthen the sense of belonging that makes our club more than just a team.
We are the University of York Basketball Club (UYBC). We have 3 BUCS teams (2 Men, 1 Women) plus a new Men’s 3s.
On the competition front we are doing well. Our Men’s 1 have won every league game so far and are set to return to Division 2. Men’s 1 also reached the round of 16 (only losing to a newly relegated Division 1 side) and the women reached the quarter finals of their respective cup competitions. We’re pleased with the progress we’ve made, but to keep moving forward across all teams we need more training time, more fixtures, and better access to equipment.
We would really appreciate your support and any donations to help us build on this success, strengthen our community, and create lasting opportunities for current and future students
To support the rapid expansion of UYBC following a new Men’s 3 and increased interest in the women’s team we are raising £2,000 for the following…
£700 – Additional Court Time
Rising court hire costs and limited weekly hours have led to overcrowded sessions, with players often booking extra court time out of pocket. With more funds, we can reduce overcrowding and we can allocate more time to beginner and development sessions to ensure the club is welcoming to all players at every level.
£500 – Friendlies and Inter-Club Matches
This funding will allow us to organise more competitive fixtures outside the BUCS schedule, particularly for our Men’s 3’s team who are not currently competing in BUCS. These fixtures are essential for providing meaningful competitive experience at all experience levels.
£500 – New Basketballs
We will purchase additional basketballs to support our increased membership. Currently, the Men’s teams have only four high-quality basketballs suitable for matches and training. Meanwhile the women’s team have not seen upgraded game balls in over 5 years.
We regularly rely on players bringing their own basketballs, which is not a sustainable long-term solution, particularly as members graduate and take their equipment with them.
£300 – Sustaining Club
This will go towards the various club associated costs. For instance, scoresheets or spare kit for early on in the season so new players don’t play BUCS games in bibs.
This funding is important because it allows us to grow as both competitive teams and an inclusive university community.
Limited court time has restricted progression for our Men’s 2s and prevented clearer pathways for our Men’s 3s, while growing demand on the Women’s side means not everyone currently has the opportunity to get involved.
With additional sessions, we can support promotion ambitions, introduce beginner focused training, and give more students the chance to build confidence, improve their wellbeing, and feel part of a team and wider community during their time at university.
Below are some of the challenges and events we will complete as part of the week:
12-Hour Continuous Game
Our Men’s and Women’s teams will rotate throughout the day in a continuous endurance challenge. The losing team will have to complete a forfeit, so stay tuned into our social media.
Throughout the livestream we will introduce donation activated handicaps e.g non-dominant hand only, no dribbling, or score multipliers.
Marathon Dribble Challenge
A group of selected players will cover a marathon distance while continuously dribbling a basketball across York during the week. Progress updates, distance trackers and mini-forfeits will take place if runners do not hit their targets.
Bounty Tag
Donors, you get to place “bounties” (forfeits) on specific players. Other players will find members and tag them during the week. If someone is tagged they must complete all the bounties placed on them. All tags and forfeits will be filmed and shared on social media!
3v3 Open Tournament
We’ll be hosting an outdoor 3v3 basketball tournament open to all students, where teams enter to compete for the title of UYBC 3v3 Champions. Expect fast paced games, a great atmosphere, and plenty of competitive energy throughout the day.
Entry fees will go directly towards our Challenge Week fundraising total, and we’ll be sharing fixtures, results and highlights so you can follow along.
Inter-Club Crossover Challenges
We’ll be teaming up with other university sports clubs for a series of crossover challenges taking them on in basketball themed contests while also trying their sports. From swapping training sessions to skill-based mini competitions, these events will bring different sporting communities together in a fun and competitive way.
You can keep up to date with our progress, Challenge Week events and results throughout the week by following us on Instagram, where we’ll be sharing regular updates and highlights.
