We are raising money to break down financial barriers to participation and competition in the club, to increase the number of opportunities members can access. We’re hoping that increased accessibility will allow members to grow their confidence in their ability and encourage growth in the inclusivity of the club.
Our club has a range of long/middle distance runners, sprinters and field athletes, and we cater to a range of abilities.
We won Club of the Year in 22/23 due to the growth and community the club had achieved, and in subsequent years we have been able to continue growing the club in terms of membership and opportunities. Our biggest achievement in terms of growth is the increased number of sprinters. With only one or two sprinters in 22/23, we now have a much more equal number of sprinters compared to long distance runners at track sessions and competitions.
As a much bigger club (the biggest it’s possibly ever been!) there are many more opportunities for competition, especially for sprinters, but this has unfortunately meant that the costs of running the club has greatly increased. As a club, our main aim is to support all athletes to try and achieve their full potential, and subsidising the costs of entry and transport fees is fundamental to allowing members to access competitions in this cost of living crisis.
With generous donations from people like you, we will be able to increase access to competitions and encourage further growth within the club.
We would really appreciate any donations you are able to make to support our club and contribute to breaking down financial barriers.
Any donations will be put towards transport and competition costs in order to be able to subsidise these for athletes as much as possible to increase accessibility. £10-20 would be able to fund transport to a local competition for one person where a coach isn’t financially advantageous; on average £175 would cover the cost of a team entry to a competition; £500 would cover the cost of a coach to a day competition; £1000 would cover the cost of 2 competitions. Our overall target goal of £2,000 would be able to nearly cover the cost of a coach to the BUCS cross country weekend if it’s located far away, to offer as many opportunities for our members as possible.
Being able to subsidise competition entry and transport will make it far more accessible to people with financial barriers. In a survey completed in regards to semester one, financial costs and confidence about ability were the two predominant barriers to competition. By breaking down financial barriers, we will be able to work on athlete’s confidence and wellbeing. This will improve team spirit, and give greater opportunities for people to compete for the university and for themselves.
Below are some of the challenges we will complete as part of the week:
Our main source of social media is our instagram page where you can keep up to date with all of the challenges that are taking place and keep track of our fundraising milestones! We would love for you to follow us @uniofyorkac to find out more.
We would love you to donate as much or as little as you are able and any donations are hugely appreciated. Your donation could also help us unlock fundraising challenges which will help us reach our goal even faster (you can see these on the challenges page).
If you are looking to support an individual athlete or specific challenge please put a message with your donation saying who.
Alternatively, if you are unable to donate then please do spread the word by signing up as a Challenge Week ambassador for our club, and sharing our social media posts to your own socials so as many people as possible can read about our efforts!
